Collection created by Isabel was the daughter of Catherine Salt (nee Crossley, who died 1930) and Titus Salt Junior (1843-1887). . Her brothers were Gordon (1866-1938), Harold (1868-1943) and Lawrence Salt (1874-1946). Isabel did not marry but adopted a daughter, Rosemary Golege Steel who was known as Betty (1917-2016). Isabel was born and brought up in the family home of Milner Field, Bingley, Yorkshire until c1903. She lived at various addresses (including 20 Spring Grove, Harrogate, Yorkshire), until moving to Springwood, Oxted, Surrey [1925] where she lived until near her death. Isabel travelled extensively in the UK and Europe from the age of 13 years onwaRoad The records cover her trips to France, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. The records show that from at least 1909 Isabel was actively involved in the women's suffrage movement; she campaigned with the Women's Liberal Association and identified as a suffragist (rather than a suffragette). They also demonstrate Isabel's wider interest in politics, philosophy and ethics (particularly the League of Nations, militarism and disarmament) and her continued support for Saltaire, notably Saltaire Congregational Church. The collection was kept by Isabel and donated to Saltaire Archive by her family in November 2017. The collection covers the whole of Isabel's life and also includes records relating to family members, notably her mother and brother Lawrence, some of which are in German, French, Dutch and Italian. dcterms:identifier 2018.9 dcterms:subject Salt family Politics Holidays dcterms:title Isabel Salt collection dcterms:type collection -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/214 dcterms:creator unknown dcterms:created 1887 dcterms:description Black and white tinted large framed photograph of Princess Beatrice, and her husband Prince Henry of Battenburg planting a tree. Clive is being interviewed by Graham Haughton of the University of Manchester. The recording of the start of the interview is of poor quality. Clive Woods talks about his part in the process of making Saltaire into a World Heritage Site. He starts by referring to the reopening of Saltaire Railway Station (closed in the 1960s) in the 1980s and claims that this was the start of the 'gentrification' of Saltaire. He goes on to talk about the campaign agains a proposed Shipley bye-pass that would have gone along the route of Coach Road next to Roberts Park. Clive also mentions some of the older inhabitants of Saltaire, church officials in the village, and Bradford Council having no interest in preserving Saltaire, but how they gradually changed their minds. He refers to the influence of the well-known historian Roy Strong of the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Bradford entrepreneur Jonathan Silver. He goes on to talk about the origin of the Saltaire Village Society and the part it played in influencing English Heritage and UNESCO in the preservation and protection of Saltaire. dcterms:format audio recording dcterms:identifier 2020.16.1 dcterms:relation https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/6567 Saltaire, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom dcterms:subject Saltaire village Heritage Social and community organisations dcterms:title Clive Woods interviewed dcterms:type object -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/882 dcterms:creator https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/12581 Clarke, Roger dcterms:created 2019 dcterms:description A typed article 'Grange Court-Baildon Lodge' relating to the owners and occupiers, including Titus Salt Junior compiled by Roger Clarke, October 2019 dcterms:identifier 2020.6.1 dcterms:references https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/6643 Salt, Titus, Junior dcterms:relation https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/6754 Baildon, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom dcterms:rights Content available under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licence dcterms:rightsHolder Copyright Roger Clarke dcterms:subject Salt family homes dcterms:title Grange Court-Baildon Lodge History dcterms:type booklet -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/883 dcterms:creator https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/12581 Clarke, Roger dcterms:created 2019 dcterms:description 'Saltaire Overlookers 1830-1914' by Roger Clarke, with contributions by Colin Coates: Includes items relating to individual overlookers and the social life of overlookers dcterms:format printed dcterms:identifier 2020.6.2 dcterms:relation https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/6567 Saltaire, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom dcterms:rights Content available under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licence dcterms:rightsHolder Copyright Roger Clarke dcterms:subject Salts Mill Textile industry dcterms:title Saltaire Overlookers 1830-1914 dcterms:type booklet -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/923 dcterms:created 1866 - 1911 dcterms:description An abstract of title relating to transfers, sales and purchases of land at Hirst wood - 1866 - 1911 - Information in printed text dcterms:format typewritten dcterms:identifier 2021.4.4 dcterms:references Parsons, William, Earl of Rosse dcterms:relation https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/8022 Hirst Wood, Shipley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom dcterms:rights Content available under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licence dcterms:rightsHolder Digital media credit: Saltaire Collection dcterms:subject Real Estate dcterms:title Abstract of land transfers dcterms:type legal document -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/950 dcterms:creator Arcadian dcterms:created 1988 dcterms:description China inkpot with coloured stencils of a Shipley badge on one side and one of Hall Royd Methodist Church on the other side dcterms:format pottery dcterms:identifier 2021.9 dcterms:references Hall Royd Methodist Church dcterms:relation https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/6571 Shipley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom dcterms:spatial https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/6574 Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, United Kingdom dcterms:subject Advertising Religion dcterms:title Ink pot dcterms:type ceramic -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/957 dcterms:created 1871 dcterms:description Documents relating to Sir Titus Salt's subscription for seats on opening of Royal Albert Hall 29th March 1871. The company manufactured iron and stell, based on the large local deposits of iron ore and coal. The Salts made major investements in the company which were partly to blame for the subsequent financial difficulties of the textile business in the UK. The Salts gave up their interest in the Dayton company in 1892 and sold the textile business the following year. Dayton was the site of rich coal and iron deposits. Its original developers obtained a loan from Sir TItus Salt Bart. and Sons Ltd, but they went bankrupt. The directors of the Salts company, including Titus Salt Junior, took over the Dayton firm and made large investments to develope the site. They built: two large blast furnaces with a capacity of 250 tons of iron ore per day, three fire brick kilns and 200 coke ovens were constructed as well as 200 homes, a manager's house (costing $15,000), a company store, a schoolhouse and other social amenities. What had been a small hamlet grew into a sizeable town over a very short period. In 1892 the Salt business partners had to surrender their interests in Dayton due to the collapse of Sir Titus Salt (Bart) Sons and Co. Ltd. The investment the company had made in Dayton was a significant factor in the Salt family’s loss of their business and the estate of Saltaire. dcterms:identifier PAR22 dcterms:title Dayton Coal and Iron Company Limited dcterms:type organisation -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/6867 dcterms:created 1986 dcterms:description 2 coloured photographs (13cmx9cm). He opened a bookshop, worked for a while as a caretaker at Victoria Hall, and became a well-known guide, leading tours around Saltaire. Clive helped found the Village Society and became a vigorous campaigner to preserve Saltaire and its heritage. In the late 1980s he was part of the successful campaign against plans to build a major trunk road through Saltaire. He also worked to get Saltaire listed by English Heritage, work that helped prevent the village from being recklessly changed. In the late 1990s he became a leader of the campaign, supported by the local MP and Bradford Council, to have Saltaire recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This was awarded in 2001, a success widely hailed as the most important for Saltaire since its foundation 150 years before. Sadly, Clive died in 2007 but his legacy is a Saltaire preserved for the future. The Saltaire Collection is proud to host his archive of research documents, books, leaflets and photographs. dcterms:identifier PAR94 dcterms:subject Administrator dcterms:title Woods, Clive dcterms:type person -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/10757 dcterms:date 1868-1970 dcterms:description The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel that first stood on this site was built in 1868 on land gifted by Titus Salt. The original church was demolished in 1970 due to its deteriorating condition. The current Methodist Church was built in 1971 and was subsequently modified to be more in keeping with the surrounding village. Saltaire has survived into the 21st century remarkably unscathed. With the Bath and Wash Houses and the Congregational Sunday School, the Wesleyan Methodist Church is one of the few buildings to have been lost. dcterms:identifier PLA75 dcterms:title Methodist Church building, Saltaire, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom dcterms:type place -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/10763 dcterms:date 1863-1936 dcterms:description Titus Salt built the Bath and Wash houses in 1863 at a cost of £7000 (over £600,000 today). These housed 24 baths, 12 each for men and women and a Turkish bath. A warm bath would cost 6d. and a cold one 3d. The wash house contained everything people would need to wash and dry their clothes: 48 washing, rinsing and steam tubs, 48 drying closets, a steam dryer and mangles, meaning clothes could be cleaned and dried in under 1 hour. As in the rest of the North of England, the Bath and Wash Houses did not prove popular. People preferred to bathe in the privacy of their own homes and wash clothes in their own kitchen where they could also complete other tasks. The buildings were converted into houses in the late 1800s before being completely demolished in 1936. Today, a community garden has been planted on the site, following consultation with residents in 2011. dcterms:identifier PLA69 dcterms:title Bath and Wash House, Saltaire, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom dcterms:type place -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/10823 dcterms:description Unlike many of his contemporaries, Titus Salt was determined to ensure a decent quality of life for his workers, even after they left his employ. In addition to the many educational institutions he built to allow workers to better themselves, he also commissioned the almshouses on Victoria Road. The 45 almshouses were built to provide shelter for those who couldn’t support themselves, such as widows and injured workers. Although preference was given to workers in Salts Mill and their families, anyone of ‘good character’ and unable to support themselves was eligible. Although this was unusually generous by the standards of the time, residents were subject to strict rules on their behaviour and the maintenance of the houses. In what is now No. 29, there was originally a small chapel to save residents walking down to the Congregational Church. On opening it, Salt is reported to have said: 'My sole desire is that you should be happy, and nothing would give me greater pleasure than to know that you are so'. dcterms:identifier PLA79 dcterms:title Almshouses, Saltaire, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom dcterms:type place -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/10828 dcterms:description Pace Microtechnology Ltd was a Bradford-based company that originally sold software for early Apple personal computers. By the late 1990s and into the 21st century, PACE collaborated with major, well-known tech giants such as BSkyB and Amstrad. This local business had become an international multi-million-pound enterprise and put Pace at the front of the digital revolution. From the late 1980s Pace based its business in Salts Mill. They became the first major tenant of local entrepreneur Jonathan Silver who purchased Salts Mill in the late 1980s following its closure as a working textile mill. Hodson’s Division landed in Le Harve, France in August 1915. They served in front line trenches and several battles, including the Battle of the Somme where Hodson was killed in action on the 29th July 1916. He is remembered at the Thiepval Memorial in the Somme and on the Rolls of Honour at Nabs Wood cemetery in Shipley, St Paul’s, and St Peter’s Church in Shipley. Lance Corporal Hodson was born in 1892, son of Tom and Rosa Hodson. His service number was 13083. His medals and memorabilia from World War 1 are The ‘Pip, Squeak and Wilfred’ medals (the popular names for The 1914 Star or 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal respectively) and a ‘Dead Man’s Penny’ which was issued to next of kin of all British and Empire service personnel killed as a result of the war. In addition, a Princess Mary Gift Fund 1914 box was a present for all those serving during Christmas 1914, the box contents included cigarettes and/or chocolate, a photo of Princess Mary and a signed card. These and other items relating to Lance Corporal Hodson are in the Saltaire Collection. In 2017, the Saltaire Collection received a donation of World War One medals belonging to Lance Corporal Thomas Hodson that were found in the cellar of a house in Saltaire. Through local news items and the help of a local historian we were able to trace his relatives who were than reunited with these medals. The family generously decided to leave these in the collection. dcterms:identifier PAR144 dcterms:title Hodson, Thomas dcterms:type person -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/13496 dcterms:creator Brook, Les dcterms:created 2024 dcterms:description A research document from local historian Les Brook on the history of Sir Titus Salt before the move of his business to Saltaire in 1853. The building is now referred to as Victoria Hall. Although not part of the temperance movement, Titus Salt was staunchly opposed to the construction of a public house in his village, having seen many workers in Bradford drink their wages away as soon as they were paid and fail to provide for their families. Residents were free to drink at home or at pubs outside the village but Salt hoped they would be attracted by the more immediate Social Club and Institute. The founding rules of the Club and Institute stated that its objects were 'to afford to the inhabitants of Saltaire, and its neighbourhood, the means of social intercourse, mutual help, mental and moral improvement and rational recreation, also to afford facilities for holding meetings of Friendly and other Societies'. There was a small quarterly charge for membership, whch was open to men, women and young people over the age of 13. The building housed rooms for billiards, bagatelle, chess and drafts, reading, classrooms, an extensive library, a laboratory and a large hall for lectures and concerts. In the 1880s it housed the Schools of Art and Science before they moved to the purpose-built Exhibition Building. dcterms:identifier PAR146 dcterms:relation https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/8011 Victoria Hall, Saltaire, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom dcterms:title Saltaire Club and Institute dcterms:type organisation -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/13844 dcterms:description Various scraps of paper with notes written by Isabel Salt - some addresses, accounts, text - including: Visit card to Mrs Radmore, Penzance 1920 Noted to Helena Griffite nee Fletcher To Betty 1942 Rockingham tea service notes Ponsbourne Park, Hertford 1 Dec 1904 To Nancy Minks in Solihull Addresses for David John, Dr Walkin, Audrey Nautline? dcterms:identifier 2018.9.1.2.26 dcterms:references https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/6636 Salt, Isabel dcterms:subject Salt family dcterms:title Assorted papers dcterms:type document -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/13913 dcterms:created 1950 dcterms:description Part of the series of letters and leaflets concerning Saltaire Congregational Church (1939-1959): Programme for the service of re-dedication of the Church organ (02.09.1950). including printed copy of the hymn 'Jerusalem' to be sung during the organ recital. dcterms:identifier 2018.9.2.4.2.10 dcterms:subject Salt family Religion Philanthropy dcterms:title Papers relating to Philanthropy dcterms:type document -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/13915 dcterms:created 1959 dcterms:description Part of the series of letters and leaflets concerning Saltaire Congregational Church (1939-1959): Saltaire Congregational Church Centenary celebration service pamphlet (1959) dcterms:identifier 2018.9.2.4.2.12 dcterms:subject Salt family Religion Philanthropy dcterms:title Papers relating to Philanthropy dcterms:type document -- url https://explore.saltairecollection.org/s/p/item/14063 dcterms:created 1920 dcterms:description Photograph shows an open top small bus full of seated people on several rows. Leading Japanese scholars and statesmen visited major industrialised nation to raise the profile of Japan following its period of isolation that had ended in the 1850s. They were also involved in trying to renegotiate trade agreements, and also tasked with gathering information on modern industrial, educational, military and political processes and structures. In Autumn 1872 the Iwakura Embassy visited Saltaire as an example of a model industrial village and modern, integrated textile mill.
