	Dayton was the site of large deposits of coal and iron. During the 1880s the Salt family invested heavily in a local coal and iron smelting business, and created a town for its workers. The cost of the investment contributed to the financial problems of the Salts' textile business which eventually led to its being sold in the 1890s.

In 1925 Dayton was the location for the famous 'Scopes Monkey Trial' concerning the teaching of evolution in schools.
