Salt High School building, Saltaire, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom The Salt School building on Victoria Road opened in 1868 as the location for the Factory School associated with Salts Mill. Before this, the Factory School was housed in the Dining Hall further down the road. There were both day scholars and half-timers, who would work at the mill for half a day and attend school for the other half. Boys entered on the right and girls on the left and the school was designed to cater for 750 children initially. In 1874, there were 806 half-timers and 454 day scholars, with an average attendance of 665. The schools were constructed with state-of-the-art technology: hot water central heating, gas lighting, and tip-up lavatories. In 1878, the school moved to the newly-built Albert Road Board School (today Saltaire Primary School). The Victoria Road building became the Salt High School catering for both girls and boys. The High School eventually moved to a new site on the far side of Roberts Park. Today the original building, along with the Exhibition Building, Dining Hall and the Jonathan Silver building, forms Shipley College, a further education institution. Outside the building there are two lions and two more on the opposite side of the road. Their names can just be made out, inscribed on their pedestals: Peace, War, Vigilance and Determination. Local legend has it that these were originally constructed for Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square. This is, unfortunately, almost certainly a myth. -
2018.51: Tree planting by Princess Beatrice A group photograph recording the planting of a tree by Princess Beatrice and her husband Prince Henry of Battenburg when they visited Saltaire to preside at the opening of the new School of Art and Science in 1887. The Princess is at the front centre, with Prince Henry on her right and Titus Salt Junior on her left. Three other dignitaries stand behind them. They are stood partly on grass, partly on a rug next to a tree which has just been planted. The location may be Saltaire Park (now Roberts Park) although the Princess was staying at Milner Field, the home of Titus Salt Junior, so it may have been there. -
Shipley College Centenary Today Shipley College occupies several buildings in Saltaire. The College's origins lie in the Technical and Art School based in the Exhibition Building in Saltaire. Briefly named the School of Art and Science, the new school was conceived by Titus Salt Junior and opened in 1887. The 100th anniversary of foundation of the College, and its predecessors, was celebrated in 1987. -
Saltaire Club and Institute The Saltaire Club and Institute opened in 1870 and was based in a large new building on Victoria Road, above Salts Mill. The building is now referred to as Victoria Hall. Although not part of the temperance movement, Titus Salt was staunchly opposed to the construction of a public house in his village, having seen many workers in Bradford drink their wages away as soon as they were paid and fail to provide for their families. Residents were free to drink at home or at pubs outside the village but Salt hoped they would be attracted by the more immediate Social Club and Institute. The founding rules of the Club and Institute stated that its objects were 'to afford to the inhabitants of Saltaire, and its neighbourhood, the means of social intercourse, mutual help, mental and moral improvement and rational recreation, also to afford facilities for holding meetings of Friendly and other Societies'. There was a small quarterly charge for membership, whch was open to men, women and young people over the age of 13. The building housed rooms for billiards, bagatelle, chess and drafts, reading, classrooms, an extensive library, a laboratory and a large hall for lectures and concerts. In the 1880s it housed the Schools of Art and Science before they moved to the purpose-built Exhibition Building. -
