2018.51: Tree planting by Princess Beatrice A group photograph recording the planting of a tree by Princess Beatrice and her husband Prince Henry of Battenburg when they visited Saltaire to preside at the opening of the new School of Art and Science in 1887. The Princess is at the front centre, with Prince Henry on her right and Titus Salt Junior on her left. Three other dignitaries stand behind them. They are stood partly on grass, partly on a rug next to a tree which has just been planted. The location may be Saltaire Park (now Roberts Park) although the Princess was staying at Milner Field, the home of Titus Salt Junior, so it may have been there. -
2024.64: Sir Titus Salt and George Moore Sir Titus Salt and George Moore by James Burnley. Green hardback book with image of oil lamp. Part of The World's Workers series. Contains two biographies, one of Sir Titus Salt and the other of his contemporary George Moore who was a lace merchant and philanthropist. This particular book has a handwritten enscription on the first page. It states that the book was presented to 'Wm. Hollingsworth' as a prize for attendance at the Wesleyan Synday School in 1886. Saltaire Cricket Club Saltaire Cricket Club was founded in 1869 and still operates today. It's home has always been Roberts (orginally Saltaire) Park where it has a scenic pitch and pavillion with a backdrop of the River Aire, Salts Mill and the United Reformed Church. Among its more famous players was the England bowler Sydney Barnes who played for the club between 1915 and 1925 and helped Saltaire win the Bradford League three times. Jim Laker, the outstanding England spin bowler of the 1950s, lived in Shipley, attended the Salt High School and played for the Cricket Club in the late 1930s. The club remains very active today playing in the Aire & Wharefdale Senior Cricket League. -
Beatrice, Princess Princess Beatrice was the youngest child of Queen Victoria. In 1887 she visited Saltaire with her husband Prince Henry of Battenburg to preside at the opening of the Royal Yorkshire Jubilee, an exhibition to celebrate her mother's silver jubilee, and organised by TItus Salt Junior in honour of his father and to help funding of the new School of Art and Science in the village. The Royal party stayed with Titus Junior and his wife Catherine at thier home of Milner Field. -
Salt, Catherine Catherine was born in 1846 into one family of textile magnates, the Crossleys of Halifax, and married into another when Titus Salt Junior became her husband in 1866. In some ways Catherine was quite conventional, raising four children and running her privileged Victorian household, including hosting the Prince of Wales and later his sister Princess Beatrice at her home. But Catherine clearly had deep and wide interests in social and educational issues, particularly the education of girls. She helped found Bradford Girls Grammar School and served for many years on its board, and also the board of the Salt Schools. -
Milner Field, Bingley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom Milner Field was a neo-gothic mansion built for Titus Salt Junior and Catherine Salt. They purchased Milner Field Estate on the ourskirts of Bingley in 1869. An existing manor house and farm were demolished and replaced with a new house, completed in 1871, and a new model farm. At Milner Field, the Salts hosted the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1882 when they were visting Bradford. In 1887 Princess Beatrice and her husband also stayed at the house while visting to open the new School of Art and Science in Saltaire. -

Account of their early lives in Italy and then travelling to Britain in the 1950s to work in the textile industry. -
2015.1: Dayton tea pot Teapot, taken to Dayton as a wedding gift for Percival and Eva (nee Hanson) Johnson. Percy was involved in the financial management of the Dayton Coal and Iron Company set up by the directors of Sir Titus Salt (Bart), Sons and Co Ltd. Eva was the youngest daughter of William Hanson, the head of the engineering department at Salts Mill. The Saltaire historians Dave Shaw and David King visitied Dayton to research its history and were given the teapot to to give to Eva's great-nephew Donald Hanson, who had been the chair of Illingworth, Morris the last owners of Salts Mill as a working textiles business. Donald donated the teapot to the collection, as he considered it 'a known 19th century artefact that binds the communities of Saltaire & Dayton'. -
