Iwakura EmbassyThe Iwakura Embassy (or Iwakura Mission) was a diplomatic mission to North America and Europe from 1871 to 1873. Leading Japanese scholars and statesmen visited major industrialised nation to raise the profile of Japan following its period of isolation that had ended in the 1850s. They were also involved in trying to renegotiate trade agreements, and also tasked with gathering information on modern industrial, educational, military and political processes and structures. In Autumn 1872 the Iwakura Embassy visited Saltaire as an example of a model industrial village and modern, integrated textile mill. They were interested in the amenities of the village as well as the mill itself.

J. Parkinson and Son LimitedJoseph Parkinson founded his engineering company in 1865. The business specialised in making machinery for the booming textile industry.

Lockwood and MawsonMajor company of architects in nineteenth century Bradford. Responsible for key buildings in Bradford, such as teh Town Hall, The Wool Exchange and St George's Hall, and most of Saltaire.

Lockwood, Henry FrancisInfluential British architect. In 1849 he formed a highly successful partnership with William Mawson. They designed major buildings in Bradford, including St George's Hall and the Wool Exchange. Sir Titus Salt engaged them to desgn his new Salts Milll and its surrounding village of Saltaire, including its many publoic buildings.

Mason, PamelaPamela Mason was the daughter of Isidore Ostrer, one of the owners of Illingworth, Morris and Company Limited who purchased the Salts (Saltaire) Ltd business, including Salts Mill, in the 1950s. Following Isidore's and his brother's Maurice deaths in 1975, Pamela controlled 46% of the shares of Illingworth, Morris. She became involved in a dispute with the 'Yorkshire DIrectors' over the future of the company. This was well-reported in the press, partly because Pamela Mason was a Hollywood celebrity, having been a chatshow host and having been married to the leading actor James Mason.

Messrs Smith, Rhodes, Maddocks and Roberts Isaac Smith, John Rhodes, John Maddocks and James Roberts were Bradford businessmen who formed a consortium to purchase the business of Sir TItus Salt Bart. and Sons Co. Limited from the Salt family in 1893. They became directors of the company after the purchase. Smith and Maddocks resigned in 1897 and sold their shares to Roberts. Rhodes resigned in 1902 and also sold his shares to Roberts who then remained as sole owner until 1918. -
Milner, DorisDoris was born in Saltaire, around 1912. Her family lived in Constance Street and she attended Albert Road School. Doris married a man who farmed at the site now occupied by Buttershaw School. Doris's father and grandfather both worked in Salts Mill. Doris had a great love for Saltaire and still kept her interest in the area until she died in 2006. Doris kindly donated a collection of 6 books she had received as prizes from the Saltaire Congregational Church for attending Sunday School.

Morrell, George George arrived in Saltaire in 1860 to be an assistant teacher in the Factory School that provided part-time education for some of the children working in Salts Mill. By the early 1870s he was the headmaster, later moving to be head of the nearby Shipley Central School. George was a member of the Saltaire Congregational Church and long-serving Superintendent of its magnificent Sunday School. A life-long teetotaller, George promoted responsible drinking and was one of the founders of the Shipley Temperance Union in 1892, becoming President in 1902. He finally retired after 45 years of service. He was obviously fondly thought of and well respected. A magnificent illuminated presentation book was given to him on retirement, paid for by public subscription and to which Sir James Roberts and many eminent past-students contributed. -
Nazran, GovinderGovinder Nazran was an artist based in Saltaire. He was known for his paintings of cats and dogs, and also of horses, elephants and people. The paintings were often done in a style of blocks of colour reminiscent of Mark Rothko. Govinder was born in Birmingham and moved to the Bradford district as a child. In the 1980s he studied graphic design at Bradford College and then at Lincoln Art College. After working in London and Cambrdige, he came back to the Bradford district and settled in Saltaire. Working as a graphic designer and then a photographic art director, he also pursued his own artwork designs. In 1999 Govinder approached the fine art publishers Washington Green who promoted his work until his untimely death in 2008.

Pace Micro Technology Pace Microtechnology Ltd was a Bradford-based company that originally sold software for early Apple personal computers. During the 1980s the company began designing and manufacturing data communication modems and later satellite TV receivers and video recorders. By the late 1990s and into the 21st century, PACE collaborated with major, well-known tech giants such as BSkyB and Amstrad. This local business had become an international multi-million-pound enterprise and put Pace at the front of the digital revolution. From the late 1980s Pace based its business in Salts Mill. They became the first major tenant of local entrepreneur Jonathan Silver who purchased Salts Mill in the late 1980s following its closure as a working textile mill. The huge success of Pace and the company's presence in Salts Mill played an important role in the transformation of Saltaire from an old, decaying industrial mill and village into a thriving modern enterprise and desireable place to live. -

Rae, Henry Norman, Sir Rae was a highly successful textile businessman and Liberal politician. Rae did his apprenticeship in the woollen trade and went into partnership with William Pickles as Pickles and Rae, woolcombers in Laisterdyke, Bradford. Rae was a good business man the firm flourished and opened offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane. He even bought some land in Australia and called it Greenhill Farm. Due to this Norman Rae and his wife travelled in Australia regularly. -
