  Promotional brochure for the subsidary companies of Illingworth, Morris Group. There is some brief introductory text. There are individual double-page presentations for each of the companies. One page features samples of cloth produced by the company. The other page is a photograph of a 'typical' scene from the Britain of the time. Salts (Saltaire) Limited is featured on pages 32-33. There is an index of overseas agents at the back of the book.   Commentary by Dave Shaw on the photographs of and brochures about Salts Mill machinery from the Bowtell Collection. 'Photographs exist of some of the machinery installed in Salts Mill during its days of textile production. Several of the photos were used in two promotional brochures produced by the company, the first (in French) in 1918 (approx) under the name Sir Titus Salt Bart Sons & Co Ltd; the second, in 1924 (approx) under the name Salts (Saltaire) Ltd. (Further commentary on the two brochures can be found overpage). Additionally, there are photos of the Mill departments following removal of machinery, presumably taken in the 1980s. The photographs were held by the late Mr Albert Bowtell, and subsequently (2007) donated by his widow Mrs J Bowtell to the Saltaire Archive. The original photos have been digitally scanned to minimise further handling and many are reproduced here for easy reference. We are anxious to document as much as we can about the type of machinery seen in the photos, its date of use, the mill department in which it was used etc etc. If you can help us to this end, please add your comments (together with your name and contact details) to the sheets accompanying the photos. The Industrial Museum has in its Reference Library a few Salts Mill brochures which are a very good source of information. Two of the brochures date from around the 1920s, one being in French, the other being in English. The French-language brochure was designed and printed by W. N. Sharpe Ltd., of Bradford and London. The Mill's company name in the brochure is 'Sir Titus Salt Bart Sons & Co Ltd'. Its text has mention of a Royal visit in 1918, so it dates from after that event. I currently judge it to be 1920-ish. (Also it is judged to have been produced by letterpress (indicated by the imprint on p15/16). The English language brochure was designed and printed by Percy Lund, Humphries and Company Ltd, The County Press Ltd, Bradford. The Mill's company name in the brochure is 'Salts (Saltaire) Ltd'. The brochure carries a page of photos of the company's board members of 1924, which presumably allows us to date it as being of that year. (This brochure is thought to have been produced by litho-press). Much of the text and the illustrations are common to the two public ations. The French-language text is briefer than the English-language text, and the English-language brochure has more illustrations. Although most of the illustrations are common, many of those of the English-language brochure have been 'improved' — eg blemishes in photos have been removed; indistinct features have been sharpened by hand etc. Even the Belwarp and alpaca trademarks of the two public ations are not quite identical. An illustration of the Mill, viewed from the SW, is common to both brochures but with modifications having been made in the later one — for example, cars have replaced horse-drawn carts seen in the other (earlier) brochure. What is also of interest is that several — perhaps the majority — of the photos are the same as those in Mr Bowtell's collection, including the ones which have been touched up. As we investigate the various photos in more detail, the two brochures will help date the textile machinery that features in the photos in the collection of Mr Bowtell.'
• Fry, William

  William Fry started working life on the railways but his life was transformed in his thirties when he moved to Saltaire to become the long-serving Secretary and General Manager of the Salt Schools. The 'Salt Schools eventually incorporated the High School (for Girls and Boys), the Saltaire Club and Institute, and the Technical and Art School In the late 1880s a new School of Art and Science was instigated by Titus Salt Junior. To help fund the new school and partly celebrate its opening, and Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee, Salt devised the Royal Yorkshire Jubilee Exhibition. William Fry became heavily involved in its planning, travelling round the country to visit other exhibitions at Edinburgh, Folkestone and Liverpool as well as the Colonial Exhibition in London. He wrote numerous letters to obtain exhibits and enlist support for the Exhibition. This was a difficult task because of competition with other exhibitions and attractions. William wrote that ‘obscurity, too small an affair’ were ‘prominent ideas to be combated’. William also became Secretary of the Sir Titus Salt's Hospital, likely after the management ot the hospital was passed to the Salts School Board in 1887.

  Photographic print of the arrival of Princess Beatrice for the opening of Shipley Art and Technical College. The photograph shows a small party on the steps of what is now known as the Exhibition building and is part of Shipley College. The streets are lined with Police, holding swords, by the building, a carriage in the street and Royal Horse Guards facing the building.

  Part of a set of dinner service, they are part of a collection of decorated Davenport dinner plates purchased by Catherine and Titus Salt Junior. They were probably from used for dinner parties, but were definitely used for the Royal Visits in 1882 and 1887 (Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Battenburg).

  Photograph of the arrival of Princess Beatrice for the opening of Shipley Art and Technical College. The mount card has a typed label 'Official opening of the Shipley Art and Techinical Institute in 1887, Sir George Chubb (Chubb safes) presented the key which he handed to Mrs Titus Salt (Dauguter-in-law of Sir Tutus) who in turn handed it to HRH Princes Beatrice who then performed the opening ceremony'.
• 2018.51: Tree planting by Princess Beatrice

  A group photograph recording the planting of a tree by Princess Beatrice and her husband Prince Henry of Battenburg when they visited Saltaire to preside at the opening of the new School of Art and Science in 1887. The Princess is at the front centre, with Prince Henry on her right and Titus Salt Junior on her left. Three other dignitaries stand behind them. They are stood partly on grass, partly on a rug next to a tree which has just been planted. The location may be Saltaire Park (now Roberts Park) although the Princess was staying at Milner Field, the home of Titus Salt Junior, so it may have been there.

  Original Programme for the opening of the Royal Jubilee Exhibition. The programme includes a short history of the exhibition and the words to a song, 'Great Britain's Sons and Daughters, by Joseph C Bridge.

  Photograph of the Triumphal Arch in Victoria Road for the Opening of the Royal Yorkshire Jubilee Exhibition. The Arch is covered in foliage, with 'Welcome to Saltaire' and the arch is topped with Angora Goats. This was part of the Royal Yorkshire Jubilee Exhibition in 1887, which was opened by Princess Beatrice.

  'Official Visitors Guide to Bradford District' (2004). This is a full guide for visitors to the area, it includes an attraction or places to visit guide with accommodation and events in the year including Saltaire. This style of booklet very common and widely used before the internet took over. Tourist information would find accommodation for visitors, this was done for a fee but with the rise of the internet this is no longer viable.
