• Technical and Art School

  After Saltaire had been built, additional school places were required. A School of Art and Science was built at the edge of the village was completed in 1887. It became the Technical School, and contained a School of Art. Later known as the Institute of Technical Education and is now part of Shipley College.
• Salt, Catherine

  Catherine was born in 1846 into one family of textile magnates, the Crossleys of Halifax, and married into another when Titus Salt Junior became her husband in 1866. In some ways Catherine was quite conventional, raising four children and running her privileged Victorian household, including hosting the Prince of Wales and later his sister Princess Beatrice at her home. But Catherine clearly had deep and wide interests in social and educational issues, particularly the education of girls. She helped found Bradford Girls Grammar School and served for many years on its board, and also the board of the Salt Schools.
• Rae, Henry Norman, Sir

  Rae was a highly successful textile businessman and Liberal politician. Rae did his apprenticeship in the woollen trade and went into partnership with William Pickles as Pickles and Rae, woolcombers in Laisterdyke, Bradford. Rae was a good business man the firm flourished and opened offices in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane. He even bought some land in Australia and called it Greenhill Farm. Due to this Norman Rae and his wife travelled in Australia regularly.
• Woods, Clive

  Clive Woods gave up his life as a teacher and moved to Saltaire in 1986 to continue his researches on Titus Salt and his model village. He opened a bookshop, worked for a while as a caretaker at Victoria Hall, and became a well-known guide, leading tours around Saltaire. Clive helped found the Village Society and became a vigorous campaigner to preserve Saltaire and its heritage. In the late 1980s he was part of the successful campaign against plans to build a major trunk road through Saltaire. He also worked to get Saltaire listed by English Heritage, work that helped prevent the village from being recklessly changed. In the late 1990s he became a leader of the campaign, supported by the local MP and Bradford Council, to have Saltaire recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. This was awarded in 2001, a success widely hailed as the most important for Saltaire since its foundation 150 years before. Sadly, Clive died in 2007 but his legacy is a Saltaire preserved for the future. The Saltaire Collection is proud to host his archive of research documents, books, leaflets and photographs.
• Milner Field, Bingley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

  Milner Field was a neo-gothic mansion built for Titus Salt Junior and Catherine Salt. They purchased Milner Field Estate on the ourskirts of Bingley in 1869. An existing manor house and farm were demolished and replaced with a new house, completed in 1871, and a new model farm. At Milner Field, the Salts hosted the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1882 when they were visting Bradford. In 1887 Princess Beatrice and her husband also stayed at the house while visting to open the new School of Art and Science in Saltaire.
• 2022.19: Yorkshire: Pictorial memories

  A book of black and white photographs from the commercial archive of Francis Frith and Company. Frith establshed a business in th 1860s to photograph every town and village in Britain and provide them for the public to buy. The book includes views of many places across Yorkshire. It includes two photographs of Saltaire on page 28: the railway station with a train arriving and Salts Mill visible in the background; Saltaire (later Roberts) Park along the promenade with the bandstand visible and two women with a pram in the foreground.
• 2024.77: The History of Brighouse, Rastrick and Hipperholme by J Horsfall Turner

  An illustrated maroon hardback book providing a detailed history several areas around Bradford: Brighouse, Rastrick and Hipperholme. Book also contains 'manorial notes' on other areas: Lightcliffe, Northowram, Shelf, Fixby, Clifton and Kirklees. Contains various mentions of Sir Titus Salt and Saltaire. First published 1893
• 2025.59: Kindergarten guide

  A book by Lois Bates advocating for use in Britain of Friedrich Fröbel's Kindergarten system for the education of young children. The book is a detailed explanation of various aspects of the Kindergarten system, covering: Kindergarten gifts; Occupations; Ordinary school subjects; Singing; and Drill. Lois Bates was a headmistress of Albert Road School in Saltaire and the author of several education-related books.
• 2024.84: Dean Clough and the Crossley Inheritance

  An illustrated booklet. The story of Dean Clough Mills and the Crossley family during the 19th and 20th Century. Mentions Saltaire and Salts Mill on page 13. 2nd edition 1994

• 2025.68.3: Saltaire Advent Window (Man and woman)

  A man and woman together surrounded by love hearts and Christmas trees, on a window on a Saltaire building. This is part of the Saltaire Living Advent Calendar, held every December since 2006.
• C1-001: Plan of the Milner Field estate

  Grey-scale copy of a plan of Milner Field estate in about 1872. The plan shows the owner to be Titus Salt Esquire (that is, Titus Salt Junior). The plan shows the boundary of the estate, the location and outline of Milner Field house and its grounds, and the location and outline of the associated Milner Field farm.
