• Bates, Lois

  Lois Bates grew up in a large family in Almondbury, Huddersfield, before beginning a career that would shape early years education in Saltaire and beyond. In 1879 she was appointed Mistress of Albert Road Infant School, remaining there for more than fifteen years. Her influential books - 'Saltaire Action Songs' and 'Guessing Games' - helped popularise her Froebelian education methods, many of which were adopted by the Education Department. Children under seven experienced a less formal style of teaching, learning social skills and manners through stories, songs and play. Although she had to give up her teaching career when she married in 1895 , Lois continued to write, producing further works including her 'Kindergarten Guide', now recognised as an important contribution in the history of early-years education.
• Hunter, Laura

  Born in Baildon in 1897, Laura Thorpe studied at Salt Girls’ High School before graduating from Liverpool University. She lectured in both Zoology and Biology at the University of North Wales, Bangor and later at the Leicester College of Domestic Science. After gaining the Annie Edison Memorial Scholarship Laura wrote Domestic Pests: What They Are, How To Remove Them, a manual that appealed to both housewives and scientists by offering solutions to everyday problems such as how to get rid of insects, rodents and mould. During the Second World War she focused on public health and nutrition. Her clear, practical advice remains relevant today.
• Pickles, Carrie

  For the first time, in 1928, women were taking part in the gymnastics section of the Olympic games. A young woman from Shipley, Carrie Pickles, was among those chosen, not because of any special gym education at school, but because she had joined the Bradford Gymnastics Club in 1919 and worked hard to gain Yorkshire and British championships. The Olympic team competed with five other women’s teams and gained a bronze medal. They could not afford to stay on for an extra day to receive it, so it was sent after them. Carrie then retired and moved to teaching and coaching within the community, chiefly at the Saltaire Ladies’ Gymnastic Club. She trained other champions, including her own daughter, Lilian.
• 2018.36.5: Sir Titus Salt, Bart., Sons & Co. Limited Deed of Arrangement

  Deed of arrangement between members of the Late Sir Titus Salt's Family and Messrs Smith, Rhodes, Maddocks and Roberts. The document lays out the plans for reconstruction of Salts between members of the Salt family and the Syndicate of four Bradford businessmen who were buying Sir TItus Salt Bart & Co.

  Semi-circular piece of black lace netting. Both side edge hemmed. Tope edge raw/unfinished. Border to lower edge. Bottom edge border heavily decorated with large and small flowers and leaves. Appears to have been removed from an item of clothing.
• 2016.2.31: Piece of cream silk embroidered netting.

  Piece of very fine cream netting embroidered with spots and 6 large flowers in a row. flowers. One edge is scalloped and bordered with a running leaf pattern.
• 2016.2.4: Two fringed damask towels

  Two cream damask towels with an outer border of an arched design and inner border of flowing leaves. A floral design to the middle and then a centre decorated with spots.
• 2016.2.41: Two pieces of decorated cream netting.

  Two pieces of decorated nylon netting trim. Cream coloured. Running angular design along borders and central pattern with flowers and trailing leaves.
• 2016.2.42: Length of folded silk lace trim.

  Length of cream silk lace trim/edging. Netting design decorated with silk thread edges and flower, stem and leaf pattern to centre. One long edge is scalloped.

  A book by Tim Smith and Olive Howarth of Bradford Heritage Recording Unit. Contains reminiscences of textiles workers about working in mills around Bradford, as recorded by the Unit. Illustrated with photographs of mills, workers and the streets of Bradford and nearby towns

  A mortgage, dated 6th January 1921, between Messrs Glyn Thomas & Co. Limited and Sir James Roberts of £3000, for the hereditament and Hirst House, Hirst Mills and weir. ( Includes a 'Certificate of Registration of a Mortgage or Charge' dated 6th October 1922, pinned to the original mortgage Indenture, Catalogued as 2021.4.9.1.2) [Sir James lends Glyn Thomas £3,000] (On the rear is a reference to Glyn Thomas having paid back the money loaned by the 5th October 1922)
