• Messrs Smith, Rhodes, Maddocks and Roberts

  Isaac Smith, John Rhodes, John Maddocks and James Roberts were Bradford businessmen who formed a consortium to purchase the business of Sir TItus Salt Bart. and Sons Co. Limited from the Salt family in 1893. They became directors of the company after the purchase. Smith and Maddocks resigned in 1897 and sold their shares to Roberts. Rhodes resigned in 1902 and also sold his shares to Roberts who then remained as sole owner until 1918.

  A viilage near Leeds in West Yorkshire. Titus Salt rented Methley Park as his main home between 1858 and 1867.
• Methodist Church building, Saltaire, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

  The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel that first stood on this site was built in 1868 on land gifted by Titus Salt. The original church was demolished in 1970 due to its deteriorating condition. The current Methodist Church was built in 1971 and was subsequently modified to be more in keeping with the surrounding village. Saltaire has survived into the 21st century remarkably unscathed. With the Bath and Wash Houses and the Congregational Sunday School, the Wesleyan Methodist Church is one of the few buildings to have been lost.
• Milner Field, Bingley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

  Milner Field was a neo-gothic mansion built for Titus Salt Junior and Catherine Salt. They purchased Milner Field Estate on the ourskirts of Bingley in 1869. An existing manor house and farm were demolished and replaced with a new house, completed in 1871, and a new model farm. At Milner Field, the Salts hosted the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1882 when they were visting Bradford. In 1887 Princess Beatrice and her husband also stayed at the house while visting to open the new School of Art and Science in Saltaire.

  Doris was born in Saltaire, around 1912. Her family lived in Constance Street and she attended Albert Road School. Doris married a man who farmed at the site now occupied by Buttershaw School. Doris's father and grandfather both worked in Salts Mill. Doris had a great love for Saltaire and still kept her interest in the area until she died in 2006. Doris kindly donated a collection of 6 books she had received as prizes from the Saltaire Congregational Church for attending Sunday School.

  A village near Leeds in West Yorkshire. Titus Salt was born here in 1803. The Salt family lived at the The Manor House.

• Morrell, George

  George arrived in Saltaire in 1860 to be an assistant teacher in the Factory School that provided part-time education for some of the children working in Salts Mill. By the early 1870s he was the headmaster, later moving to be head of the nearby Shipley Central School. George was a member of the Saltaire Congregational Church and long-serving Superintendent of its magnificent Sunday School. A life-long teetotaller, George promoted responsible drinking and was one of the founders of the Shipley Temperance Union in 1892, becoming President in 1902. He finally retired after 45 years of service. He was obviously fondly thought of and well respected. A magnificent illuminated presentation book was given to him on retirement, paid for by public subscription and to which Sir James Roberts and many eminent past-students contributed.

• Nazran, Govinder

  Govinder Nazran was an artist based in Saltaire. He was known for his paintings of cats and dogs, and also of horses, elephants and people. The paintings were often done in a style of blocks of colour reminiscent of Mark Rothko. Govinder was born in Birmingham and moved to the Bradford district as a child. In the 1980s he studied graphic design at Bradford College and then at Lincoln Art College. After working in London and Cambrdige, he came back to the Bradford district and settled in Saltaire. Working as a graphic designer and then a photographic art director, he also pursued his own artwork designs. In 1999 Govinder approached the fine art publishers Washington Green who promoted his work until his untimely death in 2008.
