2024.99.6: Arrival of Iwakura MIssion at SaltaireA photocopy of pages 79 and 80 from 'Saltaire and its founder, Sir Titus Salt, Bart' by Abraham Holroyd published 1873. The pages detail the arrival of Japanese Ambassadors and Suite of the Iwakura MIssion at Saltaire on 25th October 1872. Also included is a handwritten envelope asking whether Nakki could find anything about this visit from the Japanese side.

2025.1: Black Dyke Mills: A history A history of the textile industry of Messrs John Foster and Son Limited at Black Dyke Mills in Queensbury, near Bradford. There are introductory chapters on the development of the worsted industry in the nineteenth century. Contains many references to Titus Salt. There is a chapter on 'The trade in alpaca and mohair' that contains information on the competition ánd collaoration with Titus salt on the importation and use of alpaca wool. Contains maps of the Black Dykes Mills complex from 1854 and 1881. There is a single page letter enclosed in the book presenting it from the company of John Foster & Son Limited to 'Mr Hibbert'. -
2025.10: The century's progress: Yorkshire industry and commerce 1893 A facsimile reprint of a book from 1893 reviewing trade, industry and commerce in Yorkshire during the nioneteenth century. The first, short part is a review. THe main part of the book is a trade-directory of firms in Yorkshire. Includes drawings of machinery, buildings and products. -
2025.11: Victorian advertisements A wide range of (mainly) illustrated advertisements from newspapers, magazines and trade publications from the ninteenth century. These are grouped into four chapters: Health, Beauty, Miscellaneous, Pleasure. There is a brief forward by James Laver. The title page states that 'Compiled in collaboration wth Ilonka van Amstel from teh collections of Mr Roland Knaster and the British Museum'. -
2025.12: British entrepreneurship in Poland Subtitled: A case study of Bradford Mills at Marki near Warsaw, 1883-1939. A detailed history of the development of a textile mill complex and associated housing in Marki, near Warsaw in Poland. The site was founded in 1883 by Edward Briggs, a worsted manufacturer from Bradford. Marki manufactured worsted cloth for the Polish market. The development of the housing was along the lines of a British model industrial village. There were contemporary comparisons in the British press to 'a second Saltaire' and 'the Polish Bournville or Port Sunlight'. There are many references throughout the book to both Sir Titus Salt and to Saltaire. -
2025.13: Bradford and the industrial revolution: An economic history 1760-1840 A history of the industrial development of Bradford and its surrounding areas from the middle of eighteenth century to the middle of the nineteenth. Discusses: land ownership; wealth distribution before the industrial revolution; the transport revolution, including the building of the cancals and railways; the importance of the mineral industries in the Bradford area; the rise of the worsted trade; the urban development of Bradford. -
2025.14: Kelly's directory of Bradford and suburbs 1912 A facsimile copy of Kelly's directory covering Bradford and the surrounding area including Baildon and Shipley (which included Saltaire). Comprises a brief introduction to Bradford and then listings: an alphabetical street list with occupants and their trades or form of employment; an alphabetical inhabitants list; a list of trades and tradespeople. -

2025.16: Villages of vision: A study of strange utopias A detaled study of 'planned' villages - villages built for aesthetic, philanthropic or political reasons. Discusses such examples as New Lanark and Port Sunlight. Includes a brief section on Saltaire. -
2025.17: A time in our lives SUbtitled: 'a youth club in the West Riding of Yorkshire, revisited'. A history, written by one of teh members, of a youth club founded in Saltaire during the 1960s. Discusses why the group was founded, its cultural norms, its management and leadership, its relationships, its prominent figures, and the activities that were pursued. Also has accounts of how major events in the 1960s impacted on teh group and its individual members. -
