Baker, John

John Baker was a Clerk of Works at Salts Mill during the early twentieth century when it was owned by Sir James Roberts. He then became Roberts' representative in Saltaire when Salts Mill was sold in 1918. He collected rent for Roberts, gave out pensions and generally looked out for his interests. The Saltaire Collection includes correspondence between Baker and Roberts.

Mr Thomas asked the price of the two mills and land. Mr Sutton asked about the boathouse and land. Mr Badland stated people felt the new firm should take the park as it was used by their tenants and workers. The firm bought 50 houses in Saltaire from Mt Thornton for £6250. Mr Willy send noticed to allotments near Masonâ??s Mill.

Pensioner Elizabeth Gregson died 29th Jan. Mrs Park from Hirst Wood cottages missed rent payment. She looks after family and old father - husband killed in war. When Hirst Wood Estate passes to Shipley Council John will have to pass over all plans.

Showing the town and works of Saltaire and Saltaire Park. From an original plan by Lockwood and Mawson c.1870. The park was under construction in 1870, but was always part of the Lockwood and Mawsons plan for the Town, so this may be a plan for the future or it may be to show the completed work. The corner site at the west end of Gordon Terrace is not yet developed. This site was bought by Sir Titus in 1874.
