A copy of a report from the Saltaire Magazine of 1871 of the first lecture to be held in the Saltaire Club and Institute on 18 January . The lecture was given by W.F. Barrett of London on the subject of 'Electricity and the Electric Telegraph'.
The article reports that there were 600 people present. The lecturer demonstrated ideas using successful experients.
Half the article is taken up with a condemnation of the actions of 'boys' in the audience who had 'chewed tobacco, and polluted the floor in several parts of the hall with their filthy spittals'. - Subject
